HISTORY OF THE BIOMECHANICS AND MOTION ANALYSIS LABFounded in 1971 by Dr. Edmund Y.S. Chao, the Orthopedic Biomechanics Laboratory was created in recognition of the important role engineering plays in the field of biomechanics. Dr. Chao was interested in the development and implementation of total joint replacements as a result of FDA approval of the first total hip joint replacement in 1970. Under the current co-directors Dr. Kai-Nan An and Dr. Kenton R. Kaufman, the focus of the laboratory has turned to biomechanical testing and modelling of clinical procedures and joint implants. There are eighteen permanent staff members who work in conjunction with a group of ten to twenty research fellows, residents, and students |
