The Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery has a broad vision for research with specific programs dedicated to the study of head and neck cancer, diseases of the hearing and balance mechanisms, skull base area, pathology of the nose/paranasal sinuses, wound healing, and pediatric aerodigestive tract disorders. These programs are present and will be expanded at both the basic science level, defining the mechanisms underlying specific disease processes, and at the clinical level by developing new strategies for therapeutic intervention. Translational research efforts will build upon a strong molecular/technical foundation to apply laboratory innovation into clinical practice, with careful monitoring strategies designed to fuel further advancement. Success of both the basic science and translational initiatives are and will be predicated on the development of intra-institutional collaborations within the Mayo Foundation as well as corporate and governmental alliances. Ultimate success is measured by standard means such as publication record and funding and, more importantly, by us, as a department, to have a positive impact on our patients lives. |
