Summary

Dr. Rocca's principal research interest is the etiology of common neurodegenerative diseases. The fundamental idea is that complex diseases of the brain related to aging are the result of complex gene-gene and gene-environment interactions. The primary area of research of Dr. Rocca is to identify genetic and environmental risk factors for Parkinson's disease, through molecular genetic and epidemiologic approaches. This information will prove vital to the development of preclinical detection and primary and secondary prevention strategies for Parkinson's disease. Other research intersts include the identification of genetic and environmental risk factors for dementia, in particular Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. Dr. Rocca's research activities are part of the Mayo Neurosciences Research Program.
